Case Study Client Situation
Football NSW is the biggest Australian state body for association football (soccer) and a member of the national governing body, Football Federation Australia (FFA). It is responsible for providing football services, developing players and organising elite competitions throughout most of NSW. The Board of Football NSW engaged Pacific Strategy Partners to perform a review of its strategy and governance with a view to improving organisational performance and member satisfaction.
Approach
The strategic review that Pacific Strategy Partners conducted was wide-ranging and examined the administration, promotion, growth and development of football in NSW. Six key areas were being reviewed:
- Football NSW's strategic priorities, within the national framework and in accordance with the National Charter and alignment of its administrative and organisational structure with those priorities.
- The governance structure of Football NSW – specifically constitutional and electoral processes and structures.
- Relations and communications with Key Stakeholders including participants, Football NSW Members, FFA and NSW Government and Councils.
- The cost and affordability of playing football in NSW including fees, insurance etc.
- The financial position of Football NSW including its capacity to resource an appropriate level of growth in NSW.
- The delivery of high performance/technical programs as part of the national football development plan particularly in relation to the national curriculum.
Impact
PSP provided a number of possible actions relating to the six key areas which were approved and implemented by the Board. These included:
- Creation and implementation of a Strategic Plan & Board Charter
- Establishment of a Nominations Committee for Board appointments
- Provision of assistance to the FFA in relation to National Governance Review & Smith Review
- Creation and implementation of a Stakeholder Communication Strategy
- Review and recommendations in relation to revenue sources and costs
- Analysis of current Technical Programs in light of National Charter
