Competitive Gaming & Simulation

We utilise a unique, facilitated process to generate a high level of engagement with senior management around complex issues, resulting in accelerated and improved corporate decision making.

Supporting tools include industry modelling and simulation tools to highlight potential strategic options and potential competitive repercussions.

High stakes business decisions can be difficult for large organisations for a number of reasons:

  • Large numbers of decision makers need to get comfortable with the decision (i.e. lead team, Board, analysts, advisors). Each may have different fact base & level of knowledge, risk appetite, time frames to deliver results
  • Sheer complexity of some decisions ... large numbers of potential competitive reactions and hence market and financial outcomes.

We use a simulation/gaming process to assist companies with these type of decisions:

  • The process is structured to generate a high level of engagement with the key stakeholders. This is fundamental to improving the level of "buy-in" and speeding up decision making.
  • Academic studies have shown that simulation / gaming is a better predictor of outcomes than other methods such as game theory, expert opinion, scenario planning.

Our experience supports this and shows that simulation has a number of powerful benefits. It can:

  • Factor non-economic objectives (e.g. market share, personal or corporate prestige, desire to beat arch rival) into competitive dynamics.
  • Be used to demonstrate the implications when competitors misinterpret each others' intent.
  • Be a good vehicle to flesh out any "cognitive biases" of key managers which can then be tested by the decision making group (e.g. over-optimism, anchoring effect, risk taking to avoid crystallising losses).
  • Provide an opportunity for learning (when game is played several times).
