Client Situation

Our client, a prominent Australian fertiliser company, had been suffering poor financial performance for several years. The company was co-owned by major customers and there was a lack of clear agreement about the path forward. Pacific Strategy was commissioned to conduct a strategy/financial improvement review to clarify direction and to turn around performance.

 


Approach

  • Working with a newly appointed CEO, the Pacific Strategy team developed a detailed map of the fertiliser industry and its competitive dynamics.
  • This was complemented with a detailed review of the company's operations, cost basis, product offering and competitive positioning.
  • A range of strategic options were developed and assessed and a preferred option recommended.
  • After the Board had accepted the preferred approach, Pacific Strategy continued to work with the company to help identify and realise operational improvements.


Impact

The company adopted the recommended strategy as a blueprint for future direction and a range of improvement initiatives were implemented. Performance was dramatically turned around from a substantial loss situation to one of significant profitability.
